TORCHBEARER 2014

Beitrag von shimodahito »

good day all,
The 2013 prize is delivered.
So it's time for the once-a-year invite to the easiest picking game of them all because your picks last a whole year!

Here's how it works.
The torch starts with the last rikishi and last rank on the 2014 HATSU BANZUKE (rikishi/rank at the bottom of jonokuchi). If the rikishi wins his bout (called a TORCH MATCH), he keeps the torch. If he loses, the torch is passed to the winner. Points are awarded to every rikishi and rank involved in a TORCH MATCH. Through the year, the torch will eventually make way up the banzuke. The object of the game is to pick one rank and one rikishi you think will end up with the most points throughout the year's six bashos.

THROUGHOUT THE YEAR:
3 points for every torch match your chosen rikishi wins.
3 points for every torch match your chosen rank wins.
1 point for every torch match your chosen rikishi loses.
1 point for every torch match your chosen rank loses.

THEN AT THE END OF THE 2014 KYUSHU BASHO:
25 points if you get the final torch holding rikishi.
25 points if you get the final torch holding rank.
OR (if the exact rank and/or rikishi is not chosen by a participant)...
10 points if you are closest to the final torch holding rikishi.
10 points if you are closest to the final torch holding rank.

PLUS SOME BONUS POINTS FOR THOSE WHO GET CLOSE TO THE FINAL TORCH POSITION:
10 points if your chosen rikishi is one position from the final torchholder, 9 points if two positions, 8 if three positions... and so on down to 1 point.
10 points if your chosen rank is one position from the final torchholder, 9 points if two positions, 8 if three positions... and so on down to 1 point.

The player with the most points at the end of the year will get a prize.

For historical reference, here's where the torch ended up in previous years:
2006, J2w
2007, Ms33w (highest position J7w)
2008, J7e (highest position J6w)
2009, J5e (highest position J3e)
2010, Ms58e (highest position J3e)
2011, J6e (highest position J4w) -- in only 5 basho!!!
2012, J2e (highest position J1e)
2013, Ms48e (highest position Ms4e)

Average points per participant: 6.13
Highest number of points: 54 by Profomisakari in 2009

To play, please submit:
1) the name of the rikishi you think will get the most points between now and the end of the 2014 KYUSHU BASHO.
and
2) the rank of the rikishi you think will get the most points between now and the end of the 2014 KYUSHU BASHO.

The deadline for entries is before the first TORCH MATCH starts... JST. Send entries to shimodahito@yahoo.com or post on this tipspiel thread.

The "wildcard" pick, by default will be the lowest rikishi and rank on the HATSU BANZUKE-

I've already received an entree. Thanks.
Good luck! The game is so easy...one rank pick, one rikishi pick... no daily picks needed…. And a prize.

good day all,
The Tokkoriki (Jk15W) and Yonamine (Jk17W) pickers saw their rikishi picks finish well, but failed to get in a TORCH MATCH along the way. They'll certainly get another chance in Haru.
As for the TORCH, it started at the bottom.
RANK: Jonokuchi 20 East
RIKISHI: Shinyashiki

And here was the TORCH's Hatsu Basho journey:

DAY 3: Jonokuchi 20 East Shinyashiki (0-0) passes the TORCH to Jonokuchi 13 East Miyakojima (0-1) [2 points to wildcard]
DAY 5: Jonokuchi 13 East Miyakojima (1-1) defeats Jonokuchi 14 East Kaikoki (1-1)
DAY 7: Jonokuchi 13 East Miyakojima (2-1) defeats Jonokuchi 13 West Momochizakura (2-1)
DAY 9: Jonokuchi 13 East Miyakojima (3-1) passes the TORCH to Jonokuchi 11 East Ryuki (3-1)
DAY 12: Jonokuchi 11 East Ryuki (4-1) passes the TORCH to Jonokuchi 18 West Tamashinzan (3-2)
DAY 14: Jonokuchi 18 West Tamashinzan (4-2) defeats Jonokuchi 19 East Yasui (4-2)

End-of-Hatsu TORCH RANK: Jonokuchi 19 East
End-of-Hatsu TORCH RIKISHI: Tamashinzan

Good day all,
Here's a recap of the TORCH journey during the Natsu Basho. Yoohoo (aka Torideyama) picked up 10 points. With thanks to Araibira's good works, I've added links to the TORCH matches so we can witness the rise.

End-of-Natsu TORCH RANK: Sandanme 98 West
End-of-Natsu TORCH RIKISHI: Kiriasrashi

standings:
10 points - Yoohoo
2 points - wildcard
35 players with 0 points

Had Daishoiwa (Sd20E) won the Kettei-san match, the Nagoya Banzuke would have put the TORCH in the top half of Makushita. From Sd98W, I'm not sure where the promotion will be.

good day all,
The TORCH stayed in Makushita with no entrees involved in a TORCH MATCH. Here's a recap of the TORCH progress through Nagoya.

Start-of-Nagoya TORCH RIKISHI: KIRIARASHI
Start-of-Nagoya TORCH RANK: MAKUSHITA 58 WEST

Day 2 ms58w Kiriarashi (0-0) retained the TORCH against ms58e Shinohara (0-0). It turned out to be Kiriarashi's only win during the basho:
Day 4 ms58w Kiriarashi (1-0) passed the TORCH to ms57e Kotokino (1-0):
Day 5 ms57e Kotokino (2-0) passed the TORCH to ms60e Suzako (2-0):
Day 7 ms60e Suzako (3-0) retained the TORCH against sd3e Okoryu (3-0). I was very worried the TORCH would drop back into the Makushita ranks with this bout. A nice bout:
Day 9 ms60e Suzako (4-0) passed the TORCH to ms50e Rikishin (4-0).
Day 11 ms50e Rikishin (5-0) retained the TORCH against ms39e Kotodaigo (5-0). Note ms1e Sakigake (5-0) lost this same day which squelched the TORCH's chances of reaching Juryo for Aki.
Day 13 ms50e Rikishin (6-0) retained the TORCH against ms21e Masunoumi (6-0).

So ms50 Rikishin, in his first basho as Makushita, finishes 7-0 with the TORCH and will see a nice promotion for Aki. No 2014 TORCH picks were in any of the TORCH matches but there's still plenty of time for action and the prize is ready to be sent to the winner at the end of the year.

End-of-Nagoya TORCH RANK: Makushita 50 East
End-of-Nagoya TORCH RIKISHI: Rikishin

Good day all,
There remains 8 undefeated Makushita rikishi. Normally they're matched in order so Ms2W Iwasaki (Yoohoo's rank pick!) would have been the next opponent for the current TORCH holder, Ms7W Kizenryu. But they are both from the same stable. So the torikumi makers paired Ms2W Iwasaki with the next 4-0er, Ms15E Terutsuyoshi (Derek's rank pick!). The TORCH position for Kyushu (the last basho of TORCHBEARER 2014) is Rikishi Abiko and Rank Makushita 4 East.
TORCHBEARER is a prize game and the prize is ready to send to the winner at the end of this basho.
Most players don't have any points, but remember, there are bonus points in this game. 10 points to the closest rank pick and closest rikishi pick, more point offerings if you're in the bonus zone, and 25 points if your pick matches the final TORCH position.
Who's currently in the zone for bonus points? Well, if the basho ended with Abiko/Makushita 4 East:
Rank pick bonus points would go to -- charliki, Furanohana, Holleshoryu, Kintamayama, kuroimori, Saruyama, shimodahito, Simon, Wamahada, & Yahoo.
Rikishi pick bonus points would go to -- chishafuwaku (got it right, finally), Holleshoryu, Hoshihitomi, Kiritsubaki, Saruyama, Terarno, & Wamahada.

good luck to all.

good day all,
TORCH 2014 was almost a repeat of TORCH 2013 with a low Makushita ranking for the final TORCH position, and only 7 players involved in TORCH MATCHES. Our tally of TORCH MATCH points picked up during the TORCH 2014 journey:

14 points - Hoshihitomi
10 points - Yoohoo
10 points - chishafuwaku
4 points - Mmikasazuma
2 points - wildcard
1 point - Kintamayama
1 point - Wamahada

And now to add the final points. Again like 2013, only 2 entrees collected points by finishing within 10 places of the final TORCH positions (or being the closest final position to the torch). Next year, the 10 closest participants will get points.

Final TORCH RIKISHI: HIGOARASHI (closest pick - shimodahito)

Katsunofuji.....(10 points for closest pick: shimodahito)
Chiyokiryu.....1
Takamisato.....2
Daikamikaze....3
Kotaro.........4
Tetsuyuzan.....5
Goshi..........6
Tochinobori....7
Shiba..........8
Tenichi........9
Shoketsu.......10
HIGOARASHI.....25 - final TORCH RIKISHI
Mitotsukasa....10
Fukugoriki.....9
Oazuma.........8
Kotokuzan......7
Daichi.........6
Kaorofuji......5
Sasakiyama.....4
Aratoshi.......3
Tsurubayashi...2
Sasayama.......1
Wakakeisho......

Final TORCH RANK: MAKUSHITA 49 EAST (closest pick - Ajisen)

Makushita 36 East...(10 points for closest pick: Ajisen)
Makushita 44 East...1
Makushita 44 West...2
Makushita 45 East...3
Makushita 45 West...4
Makushita 46 East...5
Makushita 46 West...6
Makushita 47 East...7
Makushita 47 West...8
MAKUSHITA 48 EAST...9
Makushita 48 West...10
Makushita 49 East...25 – final TORCH RANK
Makushita 49 West...10
Makushita 50 East...9
Makushita 50 West...8
Makushita 51 East...7
Makushita 51 West...6
Makushita 52 East...5
Makushita 52 West...4
Makushita 53 East...3
Makushita 53 West...2
Makushita 52 East...1

With all final points added, our final standings:

14 points - Hoshihitomi
10 points – Ajisen
10 points - chishafuwaku
10 points – shimodahito
10 points - Yoohoo
4 points - Mmikasazuma
2 points - wildcard
1 point - Kintamayama
1 point - Wamahada

Congratulations to Hoshihitomi, the shin-deshi rookie, who racked points with both her rank and rikishi pick. The prize will be on the way. Yoohoo deserves the honorable mention and would have been a co-yusho winner had Chiyosakae/Ms25e won the last TORCH MATCH (which would have given him 4 final points). In 2011 we had 3 players hit the bullseye, in 2012 1 hit the bullseye, and this year none. Profomisakari still holds the record of 59 points.

Thanks for participating and I hope you all can update your pick or, if a new player, submit a pick for next year. You can send your TORCHBEARER 2015 picks to me now, or wait until the Hatsu banzuke is released. An invite (with rules for new players) will be out soon. Pick one rank and one rikishi where you think the TORCH will be at the end of the year. This sumo game has a prize. New players are always welcome.
Again, thanks.
